“A barefoot relambia contando sus historias y poemas…”
Mariela Regalado was inspired by her 7th grade ELA teacher to write. By day she works as a College Counselor, helping to change the landscape for students of color attending institutions of higher learning. An avid reader and writer she recognizes the importance of giving students a safe space to create and find themselves through Art.
Her performances include Wordat4F, performing for their events at Apt78, Word Up Community Bookstore, and La Feria del Libro Dominicano. She acted in No Room for the Broken written by Dominican Writers Association Founder Angy Abreu. NRFTB is an all women play that brings to life Angy’s book of poetry. It was performed at the Sweet Water Dance &Yoga Studio and the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center. She has featured for WeWork Creator Awards, La Pluma y La Tinta series at La Casa Azul Bookstore and Tantalizing Productions at the Mott Haven Bar and Grill and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
Mariela has also participated in different writing classes and workshops. She completed a cycle at the School of Poetic Arts (La SOPA) and performed for Capicu Culture with her fellow graduates of the program. Looking to expand her passion through other genres, she has taken several classes provided by Vanessa Martir named “Writing our Lives”.
A VONA Alum, she attended VONA SoCal: Poetry as Documentary with Elmaz Abinader and recently completed this Summer 2016 Memoir with Reyna Grande at the University of Miami. Believing in the power of sisterhood and writing Mariela went to SANKOFA Sisterhood Writers Retreat and “Commit to your Writing” workshops hosted by the NYC Latinas Writers Group. She has performed at the National Black Theatre for the shows “Page to Stage”, “Misconceptions” “Misconceptions Too” and “I’m Just Saying!”. In her native Brooklyn she has brought to life her one woman play “Dear Future” in the Bushwick Starr Theatre, with the OYE! Group presentation of GHD: Colors and Borders Collide at the Jack Theatre. Mariela continues to document her multidimensional experience through bilingual poetry and prose. She is currently working on an encore presentation of one Woman show “DEAR, Future”
